KOLKATA: A massive fire broke out last night at a building in the central part of the Kolkata’s congested Bagri Market on Canning Street. At least 30 fire tenders were rushed to the spot to contain the fire as it began to spread across the congested market in Canning Street. There has been no injury as the fire broke out late in the night and no one was present.
The fire broke out at 2.45 am. We are trying our best but firefighting operation is tough here because of the number of buildings. No injuries have been reported,” said Sovan Chatterjee, Mayor, Kolkata.
The building housed over 400 shops including that of medicines, chemicals and plastic goods.There were complaints of fire engines reaching late to the spot. During the operation, one firefighter has been reportedly injured. In a tweet, the DCP Traffic, Kolkata, said, “Due to a fire incident, Rabindra Sarani in between MG Road and Podder Court and Canning Street in between Brabourne Road and Rabindra Sarani is closed to traffic.”
