NEW DELHI: Minister of State for External Affairs MJ Akbar returned to India on Sunday morning after completing an official trip to Nigeria. Multiple women, mostly journalists, have claimed they were sexually harassed by Akbar during his stint as editor.
Faced with reporters immediately after his return, the minister said a statement will be released later on and refused to comment any further. With multiple women coming forth with allegations against Akbar, opposition parties have demanded his ouster from the government.
Some in the party have argued there was no case against him and the allegations pertain to a time long before he became a minister. BJP chief Amit Shah, however, recently said that the government was yet to hear Akbar’s explanation on the entire controversy.
The charges against Akbar were triggered by a tweet against him by Priya Ramani on October 8. Akbar is the first politician among several prominent individuals who are part of the #MeToo movement that is sweeping Indian media, films and entertainment.
