On December 6, 1992, a large crowd of Hindu Kar Sevaks demolished the Babri Masjid in Ayodhya, Uttar Pradesh. The demolition occurred after a political rally at the site turned violent.

The Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) organised a rally at the site involving 150,000 volunteers, known as ‘kar sevaks’. The rally turned violent, and the crowd overwhelmed security forces and tore down the mosque.

A subsequent inquiry into the incident found 68 people responsible for the demolition, including several leaders of the BJP and the VHP. The demolition also resulted in several months of inter-communal rioting between India’s Hindu and Muslim communities, causing the death of at least 2,000 people.

There were two sets of cases relating to the Babri Masjid demolition.

The first involved unnamed ‘karsevaks’, the trial of which is taking place in a Lucknow court, while the second set of cases relate to the BJP leaders, including LK Advani, Murli Manohar Joshi and Uma Bharti, in a Raebareli court.

The CBI had chargesheeted Advani and 20 others under Sections 153A (promoting enmity between classes), 153B (imputations, assertions prejudicial to national integration) and 505 (false statements, rumours etc. circulated with the intent to cause mutiny or disturb public peace) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

It had subsequently invoked charges under Section 120B (criminal conspiracy) of the IPC, which was quashed by the special court whose decision was upheld by the high court.

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Aditynath-led government is considering to scrap Samajwadi Smartphone Yojana, Janeshwar Mishra Gram Yojana and Lohiya Aasra aur Aawaas Yojana.

The Samajwadi Smartphone Yojana promises the people free distribution of smartphones.

More than 1.4 crore people – most of them youth – had registered online for the scheme.

Those applying for the scheme had to be residents of Uttar Pradesh, above 18 years of age and finished high school.

Besides, the applicant’s family income had to be below Rs. six lakh per annum.

The former Samajwadi Party government had said that the phones would be distributed in the second half of 2017.

This comes after the Uttar Pradesh Government has decided to shed the ‘Samajwadi’ prefix from all the projects initiated by the previous regime.

Names of the Samajwadi Ambulance Swasthya Sewa and the Samajwadi Pension Scheme are among those in line for a change of name.

This is, however, not for the first time that the state is going to witness politics over names.

The erstwhile Congress-led UPA government at the Centre and the Samajwadi Party government in the state had indulged in a war of letters over the use of “Samajwadi” in the ambulance scheme.

The then Central Government had even threatened to withdraw funding for the scheme if the prefix was not removed from its name.

The Samajwadi Party government on its part decided to run the scheme from its own resources.

The Samajwadi Party leaders, including the then chief minister Akhilesh Yadav, had argued that the word “Samajwadi” was mentioned even in the preamble of the country’s constitution and hence should not be linked with any party politics.

After assuming office in 2012, the Akhilesh Yadav government had rechristened eight districts named after the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) ideologues.

The Samajwadi Party government had also decided to restore the name of the state’s prestigious medical university as KGMU that the erstwhile Mayawati-led BSP government had named as Chhatrapati Shahuji Maharaj Medical University.

The sensitivity over the name is, however, not a state-specific phenomenon.

Narendra Modi-led NDA government at the Centre too has renamed a number of central schemes after the Bharatiya Janata Party’s ideologues.

The Cabinet has start to discuss the matter of Voter Verifiable Paper Audit Trail (VVPAT). It’s  Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs), the Cabinet has so far cleared two tranches of Rs. 1,009 crore and Rs. 9,200 for the Election Commission to buy new voting’s so castly

Since June, 2014, the Commission has given at least 11 reminders to the government seeking funds for VVPAT machines.

Last year, Chief Election Commissioner Nasim Zaidi had written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi drawing his attention to the funds needed for the machines.

The Supreme Court has asked the Commission to give a tentative timeframe by which it can use VVPAT machines in all polling stations.

The Bahujan Samaj Party, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and the Congress had attacked the Election Commission for allegedly using “tampered” EVMs.

VVPAT is a machine which dispenses a slip with the symbol of the party for which a person has voted for. The slip drops in a box but the voter cannot take it home.

The voters see voter-verifiable paper audit trail slip for seven seconds, which would be an acknowledgement receipt for the party they voted for in the election

The Trump administration has begun to review its policy on the use of nuclear weapons in order to compete with countries like Russia.

The review, which occurs every eight years, would establish U.S. nuclear policy, strategy and force posture regarding the use of nuclear weapons.

U.S. Secretary of Defence James Mattis on Monday announced that the Department of Defence has begun its Nuclear Posture Review, after President Donald Trump directed him to undertake in a Presidential memorandum signed during his January visit to the Pentagon

Chief Pentagon spokesperson Dana White, in a statement, said that a final report would be presented to Trump by the year end.

So far, there have been three reviews since the end of the Cold War, the most recent one conducted under President Barack Obama in 2010.

“If you look back not just to the 2010 nuclear posture review, but if you look back 20 years … you see a fundamental de-emphasis of nuclear weapons in our national security strategy.

The 2010 report had listed nuclear terrorism and proliferation as the primary nuclear threats and declared that Russia and the U.S are no longer adversaries.

The 2010 report also placed limits on the U.S. willing to use nuclear weapons.

The report said, “The United States will not use or threaten to use nuclear weapons against non-nuclear weapons states that are party to the (Non-Proliferation Treaty). It said that the U.S. would not retaliate against a chemical or biological weapons attack with nuclear weapons.”

The review will be led by the Deputy Secretary Of Defence and the Vice Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, General Paul Selva including other interagency partners.

PM Modi led a Roadshow in surat, from Airpot to circuit house.

The Prime Minister rode a SUV, standing and waving through its sun-roof, as the frenzied crowds through the 11-km route from airport to the circuit house chanted his name.

PM Modi has come to Surat for a two-day tour after wrapping up the BJP National Executive in Odisha. This is his eighth visit in nine months to his home state.

“Thank you Surat! Your affection and blessings will remain etched in my memory,” he tweeted at the end of the two-hour-long roadshow.

“He is visiting Surat for the first time after the BJP’s landslide victory in the assembly elections in Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand. We are very excited to receive him,” state BJP chief Jitu Vaghani said.

But ahead of the elections, the roadshow turned out to be a show of strength for the BJP in the backdrop of the Patidar agitation. Thousands of people lined the sidewalks of the route that the Prime Minister took. The entire stretch from the Surat airport to the circuit house was decked up and all government and commercial buildings along the route were illuminated.

Over the next two days, besides several functions inaugurating hospitals and irrigation projects, the Prime Minister will also address a rally in Katargam area, which has a significant percentage of Patidar population.

The BJP, which is seeking a fifth straight term in the state, is facing a challenge from the state’s politically powerful Patidar community led by Hardik Patel. Traditional BJP supporters, the Patidar community has been on a collision course with the party after their demand for quota in jobs and education was turned down by the state government.

J&K Police says to avoid visiting their home ”for the next few months”

An advisory has been issued by the Jammu and Kashmir police to its field personnel to avoid visiting their homes “for the next few months”, following incidents of attacks by militants on their residences and family members.

The advisory issued by the police headquarters referred to the recent incidents in the valley where terrorists, andanti-national and anti-social elements have cause damage to the life and property of police personnel.

“In view of these unfortunate incidents, police personnel, particularly from south Kashmir, are advised to exercise extreme caution while visiting their homes. They should preferably avoid visiting their homes for the next few months as their personal security is of paramount importance,” the advisory said.

It advised all the heads of various formations to brief their officers and men regarding the threat so the life and property of police personnel were secure.

The advisory follows over a dozen incidents of attacks on families of police personnel in Kulgam and Shopian in South Kashmir. The family members of police personnel deployed in anti-insurgency operations were threatened and asked to persuade the uniformed men to quit service.

The first incident of militants entering the house of a police personnel was reported in March this year when Hizbul Mujahideen militants threatened the family of a Deputy Superintendent of Police in Shopian.

The unprecedented incident had sent shock waves through the police force, prompting the state police chief S P Vaid to issue a warning to militant groups.

Vaid had said, “This is between police and militants and families should not be brought into this conflict.” He had wondered what would be the reaction of militants if police started threatening and intimidating their families. “If the police start doing this, what will happen to their families?” he had asked. However, militants have remained unfazed by the warning.

UP Police has FIR lodged against Amer Singh.

Uttar Pradesh police on Thursday night registered an FIR against cinestar Amitabh Bachchan and Samajwadi Party general secretary Amar Singh for allegedly misusing their positions and siphoning off public money during the tenure of the previous Mulayam Singh Yadav government in the state.

The FIR was lodged by one Shiv Kumar Tiwari in which he stated that Singh, who was chairman of Uttar Pradesh State Development Council during Yadav’s tenure, collected money for setting up industries and later squandered the money. ”It is a fraud committed in the name of public of this state,” Tiwari said in his FIR lodged in Babupurwa police station.

In the four-page FIR, Tiwari said Singh and Bachchan had worked in tandem to squander the money.

Senior police officials are silent over the FIR, saying only investigation will reveal whether they are guilty or not. Reacting sharply to the issue, Samajwadi Party spokesman Rajendra Chaudhry alleged that the FIR was politically motivated. How can people like Amitabh Bachchan and Amar Singh would squander money, he questioned.

Amar Singh was the Chairman of the UP Development Council, cinestar Amitabh Bachchan was the Brand Ambassador of UP and had done several advertisements to attract investments. However, the amount siphoned off is yet to be ascertained.
